This week's topic was a recent topicof discussion in my class where it got a little heated between a couplestudents of opposing sides to the debate. The immigration issue is asignificant issue in the political arena of modern day America. From thehighly contemptuous Presidential election of 2016, to the currentactions of this President to enforce already existent laws regardingimmigration. As part of that political hot-potato the debate seems tocontinue focusing on illegal immigrants and crimes.
Though there are many different studies that indicate no extensiverise in crime nationally, some of those studies are misleading in thesense that the data collected is potentially bias due to thedemographics and geographical area where the data is collected (Light& Miller, 2018). The argument made that although national averagesshow no significant increase in immigrant related crimes, there arevariables existing which might create some doubt. Variables such as thetypes of crimes, the area immigrant population and the fact that so manycrimes involve immigrant on immigrant crime that goes unreported due tofears of deportation of the victim (Martinez & Venezuala, 2016).
Though anti-immigration groups argue that there has been a steepincrease in crimes related to immigrants, the overall data shows thatsince 2010 there has been a slight decrease of in the immigrantpopulation as well as the crime rates associated with immigrants(Fasani, 2018). To that point someone could argue that the reduction ofimmigrants to United States may also contribute to the reduction in thecrime rate.
