The health of the United States population can be affected by public health threats or events across the globe. Examples are Ebola Virus outbreak that began in 2014, the SARS epidemic in 2003 and the spread of the novel H1N1 influenza virus in 2009. These outbreaks impacted the international health of many communities throughout the nation. Some every day global health issues are stroke, HIV/AIDS, CHF, Renal Failure and Diabetes. The national goal is to improve public health and strengthen the United States national security through global health promotion, detection, response, prevention and control. We see and hear about infectious outbreaks throughout the world daily.
As the world and the economies become increasingly globalized we must address global health threats. Rapid identification and treatment of infectious diseases helps promote health, prevent international spread and protect the health of citizens. Many U.S. government agencies provide funding, human resources and support to global health issues. This includes the CDC, WHO and the United Nations.
Outbreaks of infectious diseases can spread from one country to another which impact trade and travel. The rate of deaths from noncommunicable causes such as heart disease, stroke and injuries continue to grow. However, the number of deaths from infectious diseases such as TB, malaria and vaccine preventable diseases have decreased over the years due to our growing health system. Social and economic conditions in developing countries are changing and their health systems have improved. We need to address noncommunicable diseases, mental health, substance abuse and injuries when assessing global health issues. For example, Kenya has implemented programs to prevent road traffic safety and violence. Advancing or expanding international health introduces new health risks. This can be prevented by improving public health by detecting, rapid response, primary prevention and total control steps.
