Assignment Introduction

We have been using the four-step critical analysis process in our assignments and discussions to describe, analyze, interpret, and judge works of art. For this assignment, select one work of art from the Americas, Africa, or the southeast islands. Select one—and only one—work or art from any one of these parts of the world.

Assignment Requirements

Use the following four-step process to describe, analyze, interpret, and judge the artwork you selected:

1. Name and describe the facts. Simply identify the objects in the artwork by describing what you see.
2. Analyze the facts. Using the language of art, describe what elements of the artwork catch your attention. These could be elements such as shapes, lines, colors, or textures.
3. Interpret the evidence. Based upon what you learned in steps 1 and 2, what do you think the artwork is about? What ideas, moods, emotions, messages, or stories do you think the artwork communicates?
4. Judge the work of art. Do the objects, elements, and meaning of the artwork achieve the desired result, in comparison with other works of art?

Body Art

Today, many people get tattoos, piercings, even implants. In the West, for the most part, body art is connected to something personal. However, in some indigenous cultures, body art reflects culture, tradition, and ritual. Such tribal markings are still used in places such as New Zealand, Africa, Papua New Guinea, and some parts of the Americas.

For this discussion, think about how body adornment functions in these cultures. Address specifics such as culture, rituals, historical significance, and any possible artistic influence. Resources and citations must be formatted according to current APA style and formatting.
