RE: Week 7 Discussion

The Dominos YouTube scandal. This was about two employees posting a YouTube video recording them doing disgusting things to pizza that were being sent out to delivery. This video spread world wide very quickly due to social medias. Due to this video Dominos did in fact shut down to sanitize their shop and the ones who were responsible for the video were fired. The example of poor public communication is the fact that Dominos did not issue immediate statement. Which the company thought it would spread more light on the video however they were frown upon by not doing so. Its an obvious way to have improve this issue which would have been to immediately make a public statement of their actions in sanitizing and fire the employees and allowed the public to know they were handling the situation.

What can you learn from these poor examples (both yours and those of classmates)?

If there ever is bad backlash towards you or possible company you run that upholds a reputation which could be ruined with a negative situation or comment. As a company or person you should make it known almost as immediately as it has become public your plan to handle the situation and a public apology as well.

What does "death by PowerPoint" mean to you? What are some best practices for effectively using visual aids?

Death by PowerPoint means to me a bad presentation being given for a few reasons. Either treating the powerpoint as pretty much a reading card for your presentation. Reading word for word on each slide will allow the audience to get bored and uninterested. Over preparing a PowerPoint as well can be distracting to the audience. Ways to avoid these examples is to be sure to hit key points not exactly read your presentation right from the slides. Also, if too much time is put into the slides different displays and features it becomes distracting. The PowerPoint isnt to show off technology features instead it shouldnt be overwhelmed with these features and instead focus on the presentation rather. When using PowerPoint some of the best practices to follow is short and sweet slides. No lengthy, paragraphs on each slide.

Persuasion is when you convince someone into doing something or believe in something, influencing someones actions. A persuasive person tends to be strong in knowing exactly who they are and able to show creditability to their thoughts and ideas. Influential per

My example is at work I work in emergency department. Part of my many job duties is to be sure there are supplies on the team I am in. Anyone in my position is responsible for stocking the team. Recently there were issues that people weren’t stocking and items were not available. This holds up the whole department. So, I went and spoke to my boss that maybe once a week I could come in and stock the department very good and put extra items in spots on each team so if and when we run out and it is busy the team would still have these items when needed. She argued that this wasn’t needed we just need be sure to stock, which in my mind I am thinking helloooo? That rule is already in place and look what ends up happening? She decided to approve my overtime and give me chance, we are month in and there hasn’t been a day yet we have ran out of needles, flushes, ekg stickers, etc., I would say I surely was being a persuasive person, convincing her it was worth the overtime pay so, the department flow, is never held up due to this. 😊

Explain how you can use persuasive speaking in your current or future career.

Right now working the ER, now I am thinking about it I use persuasive speaking often. We have patients coming in refusing this or that, just because of their own reasons. As someone who has to preform some of these tests, I try to talk to the patient and ensure them the doctor is ordering the test I am needing not for the fun of it but because it is needed. That we will make whatever test I am having to do as comfortable and quick as we can and be sure to get the patient feeling better. This happens a lot with younger kids who need blood work or IVs, trying to talk them into staying still and the good of poking them with needle. It is quite the work load at times to say at the least but, I actually believe I am pretty good at it.

The most important thing to know about being persuasive is be sure to stand behind your opinions. Be confident in what you think or believe and be sure that confidence radiates off you.
