Message: *Because I do not want to limit your possibilities for this assignment the following example of a comparison and contrast are between Donatello's sculpture of David and Michelangelo's sculpture of David. [Not Pictured] Your assignment is to compare and contrast the two paintings of the Last Supper pictured above, but this example will help give you an idea of the type of language and length I am looking for.

**Furthermore, this example only uses 2 key terms, however, you must use 3, it is more appropriate to use those terms when describing paintings than sculpture.

Comparison: Both Donatello's and Michelangelo's sculptures of David depict the character of David from the Bible who fought and defeated the giant Goliath. Both sculptures are represented naturalistically using the Classical form of contrapposto. Because both sculptures are so naturalistically rendered, they are both a great examples of Humanism. Even though David is a figure from the Bible, both artists have chosen to depict him with the proportion, weight, and appearance of a real human being. The humanism and Classicism displayed in both of these sculptures is the reason Donatello and Michelangelo are famous Renaissance artists.

Contrast: The greatest contrast between these two figures is the moment of the story that is depicted as well as the age of David. Donatello's David is a young man, whose body appears wrinkle-less, skinny, lithe, and looking down almost demurely. Whereas, Michelangelo's David is muscular, tall, and standing upright and confident. Donatello's David depict the moment after David kills Goliath and removes his head with a sword. We know this because David is standing on the severed head of Goliath. Michelangelo's David on the other hand is preparing to kill Goliath. We know this because he is holding a rock in his right hand and the sling that he will throw the rock in, slung over his left shoulder by his left hand. His face is also staring intently (almost fircey) at something in the distance- most likely Goliath.
