Assignment 1:

1.Define, provide fresh examples from the Internet, compare, and contrastand describe the styles of Impressionism with Post-Impressionism and atleast one other style from the period with formalism and rigor.

2.Compare and contrast Art Nouveau with the industrial style of theEiffel Tower. Use concrete examples, critical analysis methods and useappropriate formal terms from the world of art in your answer.

3.The style of van Gogh’s work changed over his life. Identify anotherartist of this period, be it painting or some other media, who’s art haschanged dramatically for whatever the reason. Describe this artist’sstyle critically, use specific examples, before and after the change andprovide insights into what might have been at the root of the change.

4.Technology growth accelerated dramatically and some of theseadvancements had significant influence on art, both by changing aspectsof transitional art and introducing whole new media. Identify an artform that was significantly transformed during this period or which cameinto existence during this period, critically analyze the change or theunique aspects of the new form, and explain the role technology playedin the change or the creation.

5.Reading the blog posting about the landscape painter George Inness(1825-1894) and his own words about the changes he was going through.Find at least one other artist from the period that was struggling to betrue an internal vision of art as opposed to what patrons wanted orwhat critical thought was valid and good. Describe the artist andspecific works that typify the notion of “visionary genius” (see theadditional resource below) using the methods and techniques from thecourse.

Assignment 2:

1. Does a junk dealer contribute to GDP? What about a fine-antique dealer? How? Why?

2.During the most recent recession—the so-called Great Recession—theUnited States government increased the amount of time an individual waseligible for unemployment benefits from a maximum of 26 weeks to amaximum of 99 weeks. How is this likely to change the incentives facingthe unemployed? (To be eligible for unemployment benefits, one must be“looking for work” and not have refused “suitable work”) What might thisdo to the unemployment rate measured in the economy in general?

3. Today,most of our monetary transactions are done with plastic or via bankapps, all of which are easily tracked. Even craft vendors at small townfestivals use apps on their smart phones and tablets to accept cashlesspayments. Some argue that actual bills and coins are no longer necessaryin today’s world except in cases where illegal goods and services arebeing exchanged. Do you agree or disagree with this? Could our societybe cashless? How could you give your niece $25 for her birthday? Whatbehaviors would have to change for that to occur? Who would resist, andwhy? Who would benefit? What would the risks and/or rewards be of becashless?

4. Adam Smith complained in The Wealth of Nations that many people confused money with wealth. Is this accurate?

A. Doesn’t a person’s wealth increase when he or she acquires more money?

B.If any one person’s wealth increases when he or she acquires moremoney, doesn’t it follow logically that more money for everyone meansmore wealth for everyone?

C.What would happen if the government of India tackled the problem ofpoverty by printing more rupees and distributing them generously to thepoorest people in the country?
