Assignment 1:

1.The Renaissance included the creation of a “middle class” with enoughresources to have “free time” and assets to purchase things in order toenjoy during that free time. Identify the impact of the emergence ofthe middle class on two different forms of art, explain the change thatoccurred (e.g. purpose, form, function, aesthetics) and support yourposition with evidence and a well-written justification.

2.The true nature of the world as a globe became much more commonlyunderstand and travel around the world grew. Often the arrival offoreigners to the Americas resulted in destruction if not theacceleration of the decline of entire civilization. Identify at leasttwo relatively unique forms of art from the Americas that survived thearrival of the Europeans, describe them both formally and critically andwhy these forms survived (e.g. what special purpose they played thatenabled the survival).

3.While large portions of the world opened up to the outside world duringthis period, Japan stayed rather isolated. Identify two various artforms that are uniquely Japanese from the period prior to Japan beingopened to the West by Commodore Perry. Describe and critically analyzethese two forms and why you conclude they are “uniquely Japanese”.

4.Compare and contrast the Baroque with the Rococo styles and at leastone other significant style from the period. Identify what you considerto be the best examples of each, use your critical analysis skills todescribe, compare, and contrast them, and indicate which, if any, areresponses to various historical events or cultural changes.

5.The Renaissance is typically defined in terms of the work of da Vinci,Michelangelo, and Raphael. Identify the work of another artist that youbelieve was just as gifted (but maybe not as influential) as thesenamed masters, that you believe deserves more recognition. Use yourcritical analysis and formal skills to classify (in terms of media,style, genre, etc.) as well as discuss the work (in terms of formalqualities and purpose) of this artist and why you believe the artist’sstanding should be raised. Assignment 2:

Writea 2000-2250 word essay that addresses the points below. Be sure toexplain each of these in ample detail and include multiple examples.Make sure to reference three (3) citations using the APA writing stylefor each article. Clearly mark the headings in your paper so theprofessor knows exactly which topics you are discussing. Include a coverpage and a reference page, which do not count towards the minimum wordamount.

Essay Questions:

• Composea “start of the school year” letter to families. Give information aboutyourself, your classroom, what you wish to accomplish during the schoolyear, and ideas about how families can become involved in their child’sclassroom and in their education, including how families can contactyou. In your letter, explain two issues you are trying to address andwhy you believe the approach you are taking is appropriate.

• Whenan infraction is of a very serious nature involving possible suspensionor expulsion of the student, what is of paramount importance whendealing with these issues? Why?

• Manytimes, as a teacher, you will meet parents who are too busy to beinvolved with their children and want the teacher to be responsible foralmost everything. Look at CASE 11.2. If you were the teacher, would youwant to solve this on your own? Would you seek outside help? Who wouldyou contact and what exactly would you do?
