RE: Week 5 Discussion

Use what you've learned this week to respond to the following:

What organizational method will you use for your informative speech? Why did you choose that method?

Comparison/Contrast is the organization method I used for my informative speech. I discussed the ideal age, and the average age. Went back and fourth on what studies believed to be for each of the topics.

At midterm, what has surprised you the most in this course? What would you change?

How much time it takes into deciding a topic, organizing a topic for a speech and be able to deliver the speech in the given time frame. When I first seen the lengths of the speeches we were creating I was like how in the world am I going to be able create a speech that long but, surprisingly I have discovered it is bit tricky to fit all of what needs to be said into the time frames. There is not much I would change about the course though, it is going a bit better than I thought it would. 😊

Oral communication skills develop over time. Where do you want your speaking skills to be by the end of this course? What goal do you want to achieve by Week 11?

I want to be able to speak confidently when discussing a topic. I get so nervous that I lose complete confidence in the subject I am speaking about. By the end of week 11 I want to be so confident in anything I chose to discuss.

Recycling Benefits and Process Outline

• Waste has turned the environment into a dangerous place. With more wastes being released to the atmosphere each day, this poses a major risk to the life of humans, animals, plants, and the safety of the environment.
• Recycling could be an essential solution to these wastes and particularly since a significant portion of wastes can have an alternative use.
• The purpose of this speech is to raise the awareness of wastes and recycling as a solution.

The state of environmental pollution

• At least 8 million tons of plastic are released to the ocean each year (Van, Wilcox, Lebreton, Maximenko … Law, 25). This poses a threat to the aquatic life and makes water unsafe for use.
• 6,870 million metric tons of carbon dioxide is released each year to the atmosphere each year in the US alone (Environmental Protection Agency, 2017). This is a 7% increase since 1990 poses a significant climate and environmental threat.
• More chemicals are being released each day on land and sea. These pose a threat to human, animal, and plant life.

Minimizing waste

• Some things could be recycled. These include plastics, paper, glass, metal, and fabrics, among others.
• Creating awareness among the people and particularly the city dwellers on the need for reusing of durable and non-biodegradable items.
• Channeling reusable materials back to the industrial line and developing ways of reusing them.
• The society should turn to green energy and minimize overuse of amenities like water and electricity.

Benefits of recycling

• The health of the society will be boosted, and the mortality rate will be reduced significantly. At least 12.6 in every year are linked to environmental pollution, which accounts for around a quarter of all the deaths in the world (Lindmeier, 2016).
• Recycling will help in conserving natural resources and energy.
• Recycling will help in boosting the economy by minimizing the costs of production, availing more resources, and lowering the cost of waste.
• Recycling will help in reducing global warming, reducing harmful and toxic substances, and creating a safer environment.
