I have #13. Graham’s discussion of “God’s Image in Individuals” outlines six attributes that make up the nature of learners. Select two attributes that you believe teachers tend to overlook in their students. Provide examples of how they are overlooked and the implications of overlooking them.
To discuss and explain two of the six attributes that teachers tend to overlook in students I will utilize the examples of how sometimes teachers tend to miss or undervalue the creativity of each student. We are all created in God's image, however, we have different talents and demonstrate creativity in different ways. Graham says that "we form ideas and make things out of what God has created, placing value judgements on what we have created" (Graham, 2009, p. 89). It also presents how humanity has shown creativity in ways that God doesn't approve such as creating idols. Sometimes we can act in ways that can hinder creative development in children because most of the schoolwork is geared towards finding the "correct" answer. We must learn to see how children utilize their unique talents without judging, restricting or using a specific standard for all to measure their understanding of the material. By doing so we will be validating their uniqueness and capabilities.
Another attribute that teachers tend to overlook is the issue of Morality. As stated by Graham "God's character sets the standard for right and wrong" and "God actions throughout history have set the standard for justice"(Graham, 2009, p. 89). It is difficult for an educator to set standards of morality due to the many systems of morality in cultures and society. Especially when teaching in the Public system in which it is difficult to use Biblical teachings due to the many religions and beliefs. It is important to be able to find a balance among these systems to set standards in our classrooms. To reflect God's character on our daily activities we must according to Graham follow God's law as "there's no acceptable standard but God's standard" (Graham, 2009, p. 89). By living a Christian life in all aspects we can set these standards without direct teaching.
