Choose one of the two Case Study cases provided below:

Case Study 1 (22%):

TheDepartment of Homeland Security is interested in using computers toidentify suspected of money laundering operations within the UnitedStates. It would like to mine databases containing information aboutpurchases and travel to detect patterns that may identify individualswho are engaged in, or at least planning, money laundering activity. Itasks a panel of information security professionals to determine thefeasibility of this project. A panel members say the most difficultproblem will be determining what patterns of transactions to look for.As a panel member you suggest that it might be possible to construct acomputer program that uses artificial intelligence tomimic money laundering activity. The program would determine thetransactions needed to execute money laundering act. Oncethese transactions were determined, it would be possible to searchdatabases resources to find evidence of these transactions. However, themajor draw back is that there would be no way to narrow the scope ofinvestigation to a few potential money laundering individuals and infact a large population of individuals would needs to be searchedpotentially violated many individual's privacy.

Asa information security professional assigned to this project, whatwould be the ethical and moral issues, from your perspective, ofdeveloping a computer program capable of violating a large population ofindividuals' privacy in order to identify and potentially catch a fewsuspected individuals of money laundering? How does this play into whatwe learned in this course about the issues related to violating anindividual's privacy? What about the greater good for society bycatching these money laundering individuals?

Case Study 2 (22%)

Youlead a group of five mobile software engineers involved in thedevelopment of a new mobile cloud service for providing voice overinternet protocol (VOIP) that enables call to be made over WiFi butbetter than Microsoft's Skype VOIP product. Your manager tells you thatbecause of a company-wide layoff, you will need to give notice to onemember of your team. From your interactions with team members, you caneasily identify the two members who are least productive, but you arenot sure which of them you should lay off. You know that the companykeeps track of all Internet traffic to each person's computer, althoughyou have never shared this information with you team. You could use thisinformation to determine how much time, if any, these two employees arespending surfing the Web.

Whatmight be some of the implications by accessing these records? Whatmight be the key ethical and/or moral issues, from your perspective,with using these records to make a managerial decision? How does thisplay into what we learned in this course about monitoringand surveillance of employees?
