Case of Claudia:

Claudiais a 4-year-old girl with autism. Claudia exhibits limited verbalskills, has a limited expressive vocabulary, and is difficult tounderstand in all settings. She will not walk across a room to requestan item, but instead relies on climbing, reaching, or openingcompartments to get what she desires. Claudia spends most of her dayactively avoiding social communication interactions. She prefers toengage in individual activities such as jumping, spinning, swinging, andlooking at books. Claudia’s assessment of social communication skillsindicate that she rarely engages in joint attention experiences and useslittle eye contact. In addition, she

engages in few parallelplay interactions with her peers. She has a difficult time expressingher feelings and emotions in an appropriate manner. She is beginning tofollow one step directions and indicates understanding of the back andforth nature of communication during structured activities.

Case of Carly:

Carlyis a typically developing 4-year-old girl. She is eager to talk andcommunicate with familiar peers and adults but tends to become shyaround unfamiliar people. She is easily understood by both familiar andunfamiliar communication partners. Her sentences contain four or morewords and she enjoys asking questions. Her vocabulary is large (e.g.,knowing the parts of the body, names of common objects, animals, etc.).Carly engages in interactive play with her peers and is able to taketurns, share, and cooperate in group activities. She enjoys pretend playtypes of activities and has a vivid imagination. She expresses emotionsverbally rather than physically. She makes eye contact appropriatelyand is able to follow multi-step directions.
