1. Intentionality is essentially doing something with purpose. It is practicing mindfulness purposefully (Gladding & Newsome, p. 161). This means that you are aware of what you are doing, and the effect it is going to have. You are making your decisions actively, not just “going through the motions”. As a therapist, an example would be using empathy. This is a very important skill and helps build rapport with your client, as well as making them understand that you do care and are trying your best to help. Empathy can go a long way. Another example is active listening. In order to understand your client, and ultimately help them the best you can, you have listen. Not only to what they are saying, but how they are saying it. Being aware of their body language and their tone of voice, as well as the content, can help you get a more comprehensive understanding of how they are feeling, which is very important in this field and the purpose of the client coming to you as a therapist.
2. One skill the therapist is using in the session is unconditional positive regard. She is validating all of his emotions (being uncomfortable, hesitant to talk with a stranger about his marital issues), and assuring him that others have felt the same way, and in the past it has shown to be helpful to them to talk with a therapist about their problems. Another skill that she is using is paraphrasing. She is reciting back her understanding of what the client said as to make sure that they are on the same page as they move forward in the session. This skill is helpful because everyone interprets information differently. As a therapist, you have to interpret what your client is saying from their perspective as to be able to help them and understand them the best you can.
3. A mistake you can make as a therapist that can result in a less effective session is asking too many questions. Too many questions, especially specific questions, doesn’t allow for the client to speak their truth. In some ways, it is almost feeding your client with thoughts/answers. I think that in therapy, it is important to remember that less is more. Intentionally sticking to open ended questions that avoid putting words or feelings into your clients mouth allow for them to elaborate and make what they want of their time with you. I have learned from experience that simple questions illicit much more information than closed-ended, yes or no type questions. You are ultimately there for your client.
