I especially like your observation that Marie”ends up falling in love with Emil who seems to have freed himself from the grips of rural life” and that “[t]his might show a hidden internal thirst for education on her part or a chance to obtain it even though her current husband is not offering it to her.” If I’m reading you rightly, you’re suggesting that one of the reasons Marie is attracted to Emil is his connection to the outside world. It’s not so much Emil himself, but what he represents: a bigger, fuller life in the wider world.

If I were to write some O Pioneers fanfic, I might start by having Marie and Emil escape from Frank just before he can shoot them, then run off together for a series of adventures that eventually bring them to Hollywood, where Marie becomes a silent film star and discovers she doesn’t need Emil anymore since she’s now got all the things she previously thought she could only get through him.

At that point, their story would be the same as the story told in the song by Human League, “Don’t You Want Me,” which you can listen to here:
