Whenever all required team members are in the process of writing the an IEP for each child, it is important to know that in order to determine how a child’s progress has been measured team member’s must always remember to look at the criterion that needs to be described within the goal(s) that are set, while determining how to best measure the behavior (such as: the duration, number correct, rate, frequency, percentage correct, and latency) (Gibb, 2016).The advantage to looking at the criterion for the goals in order to measure the student’s behavior would be the fact that these different forms of measuring the behaviors are being documented by the teacher and any other staff member involved, continually assess the student throughout the year and year’s to come.Meaning, if a student’s family decides to move cross-country, there would always be the continual measured progress so future team IEP planner’s can go from what has already been measured and assessed.Another reason why these required goals have been an advantage to student’s would be in order to prevent from any possible poor outcomes (as a child grows older) the planning for successful transition to adulthood becomes more real in a child’s life to plan for their future goals.

In the article, “Transition Goals for youth with social, emotional, behavior problems: Parent and student knowledge, (2017)” the author quotes, “The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA, 2004) mandates that students who receive special education services must have postsecondary plans outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) by the age of 16 years. IEPs must contain “appropriate measurable postsecondary goals based upon age appropriate transition assessment related to training, education, employment, and where appropriate, independent skills” (Harrison, R. et al., p. 2, 2017).The writer of this discussion, has a child who will be entering into the 12th grade this upcoming school year and has had her child on an IEP all his school years.Her husband and her have had concerns (or negative thoughts from their child being on an IEP and a couple previous experiences) of the possibility that their child may not be able to do what he has been really wanting to do for a career option because of the negative impact (some, not all) Teacher’s have had on his learning, which were the idea that he was not going to be “smart enough” to be that Business man he hoped to be one day.Overall, the writer’s husband and herself have remained hopeful and never given up because they know God will lead, guide, and direct their son’s footsteps into the calling He has for his life.
