1960s: “Bonnie and Clyde”

This was a decade of the Cold War and movements to change society. The anti-establishment movement expressed distrust of government, capitalism and the workplace. How much more rebellious against capitalism and law enforcement can you get than the robbers, Bonnie & Clyde?

In the 1960s there were rights movements for equality for African Americans, women, Chicanos, and American Indians. Baby boomers developed a new attitude toward sexuality, rebelling against the constraints of the 1950s. The nuclear arms race spread fears of annihilation, and interestingly, mothers led the first anti-nuclear protest: A group called Women Strike for Peace (WSP) grew out of a one-day protest in 1961 (their slogan: “End the Arms Race-Not the Human Race”) and they were among the first to protest the Vietnam War.

Independence, individuality, rebellion against controlling institutions, and equality were among the themes of the 1960s. The women’s movement was launched in 1963 with Betty Friedan’s book, The Feminine Mystique. The National Organization for Women was founded in 1966. By then, The Pill had been on the market for 6 years, giving women sexual freedom and sexual independence outside of marriage that they had never before experienced.

The violence of the assassinations of President Kennedy (1963) and Malcolm X (1965) and of the Vietnam War dominated American culture by 1967. Note that “Bonnie and Clyde” was considered a “landmark” film, and it’s graphic violence—a first in its era–was only one reason for the films historic importance. The sexuality and sensuality of the characters were another.
