Jerry has been noticing that his son ben, five years old, has been having difficult time breathing when his son is playing. He will complain about his chest hurting when he is trying to catch his breath. Jerry has noticed that Ben has been coughing at night and it keeps him up. Ben was outside playing when he stops and becomes frantic because he can not catch his breath. Jerry rushes him to the hospital. The doctors hospitalize Ben and completes a few tests to make sure they give the proper diagnosis on Ben. Ben has been diagnosed with Asthma, which is a chronic medical condition. (Chronic means that this will be persistent in the persons life for a long time.) The doctors prescribe medication to Ben and suggest that he limits his physical activities. The medication will help with asthma attacks and the coughing Ben has been experience at night.

The risk factors that Jerry was not taking Ben to the doctor when the signs started. He allows Ben to keep participating in daily activities that have been causing it hard to breath. Even though Asthma is not considered dangerous it could possibly be if the person does not have access to medication and will need emergency medical attention. Stressors to this situation was Ben not being able to breathe, keeping both Jerry and Ben up all hours of the night due to coughing.

As a counselor understanding the stress the family has gone through will help me connect with the family. When someone is unable to breath due to asthma attach like Ben has had it can create anxiety. Trying to gain control of their breathing and having the fear of not being able to breath can be a dangerous. The fear can distract them from getting the medication to help or to calm themselves down to gain control of the breathing. Learning more about this chronic medical condition will inform me on how to better the family.

Two strategies that I would use to ensure that the family receives the support they need is to help them cope with the medical condition. When a medical condition is chronic or fatal it can be life changing to the entire family. It is important for me to help the family adjust to this change in their life correctly. If the family has trouble adjusting to illness’s it can add more stressors to the current situations. The second way I would ensure they receive the support they need would be to help them deal with the incident that had occurred. Jerry thought his son was about to die from not being able to breathe and Ben was experiencing tightening of his chest and the feeling of suffocating. This is terrifying for both members of the family. It would be necessary to help the family cope with this and learn to handle this situation calmly. This will allow them to be able to control asthma attacks before it gets too bad.
