Tips for Area of Diversity Paper/Video Review

1. Choose a topic of interest to you from the list on the syllabus (Part E-ii)

2. Browse the list of counseling videos available on the FSU Library website and identify a video on your topic of interest to review. Note the reference for the video including the name of the producer, year, title, and location. Then consult the instructor to acquire approval about conducting your review on the video.

3. View the video making sure to take notes on the areas recommended in # 4 below. It may be necessary to conduct further research on the topic in books, journal articles, and professional websites.

4. Write your paper by discussing the information from the video in an academic way, making sure to connecting the information to what has been learned in this class:

a. A description of the group/population covered by the video: who they are, what issues they normally face, psychological needs specific to the group, etc.

b. What does the video say about assessing their needs? What types of assessments have been found effective for this group?

c. What counseling methods does the video say are applicable and/or effective with the group? Are there interventions specific to gender, age groups, SES, couples, families, communities, etc.?

d. What professional issues does the video discuss in working with this group? What are some ethical and social concerns? What multicultural competencies do you need to develop to work with them effectively?

e. Discuss the applicability of the information you found to your own professional development for a career in mental health.

5. As you write the paper, try to make it of high quality by using academic and professional language, supporting the information from elsewhere with proper citations and references, and using appropriate grammar and correct spelling. Make your paper presentable by organizing it into meaningful sections:

a. Title Page: Title of the paper; Your name; Instructor; Course name; Date; Place

b. Provide a brief abstract describing in a summary form what the paper is about.

c. Provide a Table of Content with main sections and page numbers

d. Organize the body of the paper into sections and paragraphs

e. Provide a list of references in APA style (Publication Manual of APA, 6th Ed., 2010)

6. Submit the paper on Turn-it-in in advance so that you can see the originality report and make revisions before due date (only one revision is allowed).
