1. Choose one character from the Madigan family, from Anne Enright's book, The Green Road

2. Find two specific examples relating to your character that illuminate something interesting or significant about the novel. These examples should be from different sections of the novel, one from the first half and the other from the latter half of the book. In your post, identify your examples specifically: quote them & give page references.

3. Discuss your chosen examples, showing what insight they offer into your chosen character and into Enright's construction of character.

Your discussion should be 1-2 paragraphs in length

Then…

based in the “Thirties” section of Elizabeth Bowen’s Collected Stories, and discussion will be built around individual commentaries. Here is the procedure:

1. There are over 20 stories in this section, and you are not expected to read all of them. Sample several of the stories, then choose one to focus one.

2. Choose a passage in the story you’ve selected; based on this passage, you will write a commentary and pose a discussion question. Commentaries are short, focused exercises in analysis of 250-300 words. Select a passage to analyze closely: a “passage” may be as little as a few lines of text but not more than half a page. After identifying it specifically, you will write a focused, organized analysis that shows what is significant in your chosen passage. Don’t look up outside information, but work independently with the text, analyzing, elucidating, interpreting, questioning, and/or connecting. At the end, provide an open-ended discussion question that directs our attention to the text.

3. When you make your initial post, title your thread with the name of the story you’ve written about.

4. The standard syllabus guidelines about due dates, responding, etc. are in effect for this discussion.
