Goodmorning class. The colonist had many grievances leading up to the AmericanRevolution. I would have to say that just before it began that disputes overthe post war taxations was the last igniter. The boycotting with the Boston TeaParty and the British response to this act, started the motion to war. I wouldsay along with the taxation that Great Britain's control over colonial tradewith the Navigation Acts and Staples Acts was another great motivator for thecolonists towards war for their freedom. I would say these points combined withthe crown's overall ruling of the colonies triggered the war, as Pauline Maiersaid, "it began with the massive failure of British statesmanship."That statement jumped out at me. Great Britain brought it on themselves.
If I was involved in the AmericanRevolution I would have definitely been a Patriot and done what I could tosupport the cause, even as a woman. Great Britain was being a tyrant to thecolonies, treating them like they were less worthy than the citizens living inGreat Britain. The colonists all came to America searching for freedom ofsomething and after the French and Indian War they found themselves beingcontrolled and treated unfairly by the country that was supposed to defendthem.
In reading the Declaration ofIndependence, a statement that jumped out at me was, "He has plundered ourseas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed lives of ourpeople." This stood out to me because these acts were done by their owncountry. I also found it interesting that the grievances are all directly madeto the King himself. The key grievances were that the king had refused to agreeto laws, forbid governors to pass laws, only agreed to laws of formingdistricts of people if they gave up right of representation, he paid offjudges, sent officers to harass them, sent standing armies without theirconsent during times of peace, rendered military independent of and superior tocivil power, he cut off their trade to the world, he imposed taxes on themwithout their consent and at times denied them a trial by jury.
