INDIVIDUAL SUMMARY GUIDELINES

Forthis assignment, you are to prepare a written summary 3-5 pages inlength (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins) describing yourown conclusions, thoughts, and insights about the policy analysis yourgroup performed. The purpose of this assignment is to allow groupmembers to demonstrate their individual mastery of the material, inorder to offset the heavy point allocation of the group assignment. Thisassignment is worth 50 points.

Students should address thefollowing questions in this writing assignment. Do not number youranswers; instead, be sure that each question is answered sufficiently ina free-flowing essay format.

1. What is the policy youresearched? Please provide a brief overview. What “expert conclusion”did your group reach about your assigned policy? Does this match yourown conclusion about the policy? Why or why not? Give specific examples.

2.Were you familiar with this policy before taking this class? What isthe most important thing you learned about your policy that you did notknow before taking this class? Did your research this semester changeyour initial opinion or understanding of this policy? Why or why not?Please describe.

3. What is the most important thing you thinkpolicy makers should know about this policy, and why? What is the mostimportant thing you think the general public should know about thispolicy, and why? Be specific.

Tips for Writing Your Essay

Papersshould use the “roadmap”approach: (1) tell me what you are going tosay, (2) say it, then (3) tell me what you just said. To assist withcontent organization, all papers must include the following subjectheadings:

Introduction—preceding the introductory paragraph

• This paragraph must include your thesis statement (E.g., “The purpose of this essay is to…”)

Expert Conclusion—preceding the discussion of Question 1

Lessons Learned—preceding the discussion of Question 2

Informing Others—preceding the discussion of Question 3

Conclusion—preceding the concluding paragraph

• This paragraph must include a restatement of your thesis statement.

Before submitting your assignment, check that you have:

• Developed a clear thesis statement that is included in the first paragraph and restated in the concluding paragraph

• Used the subject headings identified above

• Included your name

• Included page numbers

• Answered all questions fully

Finally, some students have asked about whether references should be attached. The answer is yes.

Your paper should cite references the same way you would in any normal

research paper. Your attached reference list should include all the

references you cite in your Individual Summary. If the references in

your Individual Summary are all from your group reference list, it's

okay to just attach that full list if it's easier for you to do so

(rather than editing out references you don't use in your paper). If you include new references/citations, though, please add those to your reference list so I know what you're citing.
