Barry Stroud's claim represents the idea that we as individuals cannot be sure there is such a thing as an external world, for all we can really know are our own subjective sensations and perceptions. This person in Stroud's claim, which represents the human mind, is locked in a room. The mind is, in a way, locked inside of the body. The television sets are a representation of the body's senses, such as sight and touch. This person locked in the room can only experience the "outside world" through these television sets, just as the mind can only gain knowledge of the "outside world" through the body's senses. Our minds form perceptions of the world we believe we see; however, according to the claims of Stroud and Hume, we cannot be sure of how true our knowledge of the world is because our perceptions were formed from a subjective standpoint. Although Hume and Stroud have a valid argument, it is still possible to understand what is going on in the world outside of our minds. The technological advances that humans have been making bring us closer and closer to understanding our world in an objective and scientifically based way. The fact alone that science exists is enough to provide at least some certainty as to the knowledge we have of the external world. Experiments that have been conducted, although performed by humans, produce objective results. Not to mention the advancements scientists and engineers are making in the field of artificial intelligence. A machine capable of providing feedback of the external world can surely be regarded as separate from the human mind and our perceptions.
